Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started teaching online at Foothill College?

Each quarter, new live sites are set up in coordination with faculty, Foothill Global Access Dean Judy Baker, and the ETUDES Project Staff. Faculty may not use development sites to teach live courses with enrolled students.  Please adhere to the deadlines announced for requesting a live course site to ensure that your live course sites are set up in time. You will be able to import content into your live sites from a development or other site that you own. Information on these processes is provided below.

BEFORE Obtaining a 'Live' Site

Faculty must successfully complete ETUDES NG training prior to obtaining a live course site. The training should be completed at least 6 weeks prior to be beginning of the next session. Details about ETUDES NG training opportunities are available at http://etudesproject.org/training.htm  Once training has been successfully completed, the faculty member will receive an email from the ETUDES Project inviting him or her to set up a Development site and an ETUDES NG account.  The Development site can be used to begin developing a new course.
Obtaining a 'Live' Site
At least five weeks before the start of the next quarter, faculty must contact Foothill Global Access Dean Judy Baker to let her know that they want to use ETUDES-NG to teach a particular course.
  • They must provide section numbers, as listed in the schedule, along with course call numbers.
  • They must provide information on whether they want separate sites or all sections in one site, if they teach more than one section of the same course. This is critical so that rosters will load properly.
  • They must provide their NG User IDs.

Foothill Global Access will flag the courses in the Student Information System (SIS) and create a file of NG classes and send it to the ETUDES Project staff for processing. The ETUDES Project staff then sets up the "live" course sites for use during that term and notifies the faculty member. Live course sites are set up about a month before the next quarter starts.

Why doesn't the roster that shows in my ETUDES course site match the roster that shows in my Faculty Portal?

Please note that the roster that shows in your ETUDES course site will always be one day behind the roster that shows in your Faculty Portal. This is because we only update the roster in ETUDES once a day, in the middle of the night.  The roster that shows in your Faculty Portal is updated every few hours during the start of each session and then once a day later in the quarter.

The bottom line is that a new student who shows in your Faculty Portal roster today will not show up in your ETUDES course site roster until tomorrow.

What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of allowing students enrolled in several sections to login in to the same live ETUDES NG course site?

The major advantages are that the instructor only has to login to one course site for all courses and he/she only needs to make changes to one course site rather than multiple.

The major disadvantage is that it may be confusing for students if some are in an on campus course section and others are in a fully online course section because the number and type of assignments/tests/discussion may be different.

How can I reorganize the course tabs in my ETUDES NG account?

If you would like to change the order that your courses appear on the tabs, go to My Workspace >> click on Preferences >> Customize tabs. To make sites tabs invisible after a term has ended, click on Preferences >> Customize tabs. Move to the left window and save changes.

How are ETUDES NG course sites titled on the tabs when I login?

Course Titles for NG Course Sites with Multiple Sections: Course titles for live NG sites each quarter follow a specific format.

Live course sites with a single course section contain FH (for Foothill), Course ID, Call Number, instructor's initials, and quarter/year.  For example, LINC 215 for the Winter quarter might have the ETUDES NG course tab title:  FH LINC 215 2278 JB W07.

Live sites that combine more than one section do not have a course call number in the title tab.
